Foresight News reported that according to Decrypt, John Khuu, a man from San Francisco, California, has been sentenced to 87 months in federal prison for using Bitcoin to launder proceeds from the sale of MDMA on the dark web. Khuu pleaded guilty to conspiracy to launder money and operate unlicensed remittance services. According to police investigations, Khuu imported MDMA from Germany and sold it in multiple dark web markets, receiving payments in Bitcoin and exchanging it for US dollars. He laundered his funds through hundreds of transactions and multiple financial accounts. Khuu is still facing drug smuggling charges in the Northern District of California, USA. This arrest operation is part of the "Operation Crypto Runner" jointly launched by the US Department of Justice (DOJ), Secret Service (AmericaS), and Postal Inspection Service (PIS), which has resulted in 21 arrests since 2022. The 2024 risk assessment by the US Treasury Department shows that the use of cryptocurrencies in drug money laundering is growing and showing an international trend.
