On June 8th, according to Forbes, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in the United States recently issued a warning to smartphone users to be alert to a nationwide fraud activity where scammers impersonate FBI and other law enforcement agencies to deceive victims into sending money.
Scammers use "deceptive caller ID" technology to disguise themselves as FBI phone numbers, falsely claiming that victims will be arrested unless payment is made immediately. The FBI has made it clear that it will never demand payment from the public over the phone to evade criminal charges.
This type of fraud has become a global industry, where scammers use intimidation tactics to demand that victims make payments through prepaid cards, wire transfers, cash mail, or cryptocurrency ATMs. The FBI suggests that if you receive such a call, you should immediately hang up and submit a report to the IC3.gov website.
