[Brazilian Court Convicts 14 People for Bitcoin Money Laundering of Drug Profits] The Brazilian Federal Court has convicted 14 individuals for laundering over $95 million in drug trafficking and kidnapping profits using Bitcoin. Two main perpetrators were sentenced to over 21 years in prison, one of whom was a prison security officer, while the remaining 12 received sentences ranging from 10 to 17 years. The criminal organization operated from April 2019 to July 2024 in the states of Minas Gerais and Paraná, using Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies to conceal the nature, origin, and flow of assets derived from cross-border drug trafficking and violent crimes. They also used fake tax identification numbers, falsified accounting records, and multiple shell companies to disguise their activities as being in industries such as food trade and livestock farming.
