While the industry is aware of how to build quantum-resistant systems, quantum-secure protocols are ten times slower and ten times more expensive, and no network is willing to sacrifice throughput. Before NIST establishes post-quantum cryptography standards, the industry cannot adopt algorithms that may be abandoned. The DARPA project is evaluating whether scalable and practical quantum computers can be achieved before 2033, with real quantum pressure expected to emerge in the 2030s.
