[Bitfinex Bitcoin Theft Hacker Ilya Lichtenstein Released Early] Bitfinex Bitcoin theft hacker Ilya Lichtenstein announced on the X platform that he has been released early, stating that the U.S. President Trump's signing of the 'First Step Act' in 2018 allowed prisoners to reduce their sentences through rehabilitation programs. Lichtenstein was sentenced to 5 years in prison in November 2024 for laundering nearly 120,000 bitcoins (valued at approximately $4.5 billion at the time of the crime). His wife, Heather Morgan, was sentenced to 18 months for aiding the crime and was released in October 2025.
