A white paper released by the United Nations reveals that, through collaboration with the Hyperledger Foundation, the United Nations Joint Staff Pension Fund (UNJSPF) has successfully piloted blockchain technology, significantly optimizing the global pension management process. The pilot project utilized blockchain-based digital identity infrastructure, hailed as the "ultimate technology for digital identity verification," effectively improving the system's security, efficiency, and transparency.
Previously, the UN pension system relied on a 70-year-old paper-based operation, requiring verification of the identity and living status of over 70,000 beneficiaries from 190 countries. Due to its susceptibility to errors and misuse, approximately 1,400 payments were suspended annually. Since the blockchain certification pilot in 2020 and its full implementation in 2021, management efficiency has improved significantly. The United Nations plans to expand the system based on the pilot experience and share the technological achievements with other international organizations.
