On Wednesday evening, the Indian Shipping Authority requested shipowners, ship management companies, and crew agencies to suspend the dispatch of Indian crew members through the Strait of Hormuz in response to the recent increase in attacks in the area and tensions between Iran and the United States. A recent attack resulted in the death of an Indian crew member. The International Chamber of Shipping and BIMCO estimate that over 310000 Indian sailors work on merchant ships, making India the world's second-largest supplier of sailors.
