Coinbase configuration error caused a service interruption of approximately 50 minutes, ensuring the safety of customer funds
Coinbase revealed that last week, an infrastructure update mistakenly modified the Istio ingress gateway component due to a Kubernetes resource name conflict, resulting in a service interruption of approximately 50 minutes. The interruption occurred between 12:37 and 13:25 Eastern Time in the United States, affecting retail, institutional, and developer platforms. Some users were unable to complete deposits, withdrawals, or off platform transactions, Coinbase Card debit card purchases were rejected, on chain exchanges through Coinbase DEX on Base and Solana were affected, and there were delays or failures in transfers and settlements for Coinbase Exchange and Prime customers. Coinbase will increase naming conflict checks, separate recovery tools from managed infrastructure, and test emergency access processes more frequently.
