Guangdong Provincial High Court issues case, virtual currency lending contract is invalid and should compensate for cost losses

--

According to Guangzhou Daily, the Guangdong Provincial High People's Court has released the top ten cases of commercial finance in 2025, clarifying that virtual currency lending contracts are invalid. In July 2023, Chang borrowed one virtual currency from Jin, who purchased 1.14 virtual currencies for 228200 yuan and delivered them. The Guangzhou Intermediate People's Court ruled that the agreement on currency price fluctuations in the promissory note is invalid, and Chang should compensate for property losses if he fails to return the virtual currency. The losses should be determined based on the cost price of Jin's acquisition of the virtual currency, which is 199600 yuan.
